What is a certificate of insurance?

A Certificate of Insurance, or COI, verifies that an insurance policy is in force. It usually contains the types and limits of coverage, the name of the insurance company, policy number and dates coverage is in effect. It also lists the name of the insured policy holder as well as the person or organization requesting the COI. A COI does not provide coverage and cannot be used to change a policy.
